Exhibition "Opening the Curtain" Fifty Years of Image, Word, and Song

Renowned photographer, author, and museum curator Brian H. Peterson will exhibit his life story in photographs, words and music at theArtWorks fine art gallery beginning September 28, 2019

theArtWorks™, a first-of-its-kind international art community with working studios, event space, a fine art gallery and more, in Wilmington, North Carolina, will host the exhibit Opening the Curtain: Fifty Years of Image, Word and Song  drawn from the works of  Brian H. Peterson, from September 28 to November 10, 2019.

Peterson has been a passionate explorer of the creative life for over fifty years. His fine art photographs have been featured in more than 60 solo and group exhibits at galleries and museums from Philadelphia to Houston to Washington DC, and his work is in over a dozen prestigious museum collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Denver Art Museum, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Woodmere Art Museum, and the Library of Congress.

Also a prolific and critically acclaimed author, curator, and arts administrator, Peterson was the Gerry and Marguerite Lenfest Chief Curator at the James A. Michener Art Museum in Bucks County, Pennsylvania (1990-2013), where he authored several pioneering scholarly monographs and was the editor and principal author of the landmark publication Pennsylvania Impressionism (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2002). He has lectured widely on Pennsylvania Impressionism and its connections with the larger story of American art, and his critical writing has appeared in The Los Angeles Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, American Arts Quarterly, and The Photo Review.

He is also the author of three collections of essays and personal stories, The Smile At the Heart of Things (2009), The Blossoming of the World (2011), and I Give My Eyes… (2018). His books have been reviewed in USA Today, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Trenton Times, The Allentown Morning Call, and numerous other publications and blogs.

His haunting photographs see the world through a poet’s eye and a curator’s lens, exploring light and shadow, surface and atmosphere, with a uniquely personal vision rooted in both his spiritual life and a lifelong fascination with mortality and transfiguration. Featuring more than 150 images from 17 bodies of work, as well as Peterson’s videography, books, and music, the show is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the work of a serious and thoughtful artist who not only has mastered traditional lens-based image-making but has ventured into such diverse territory as digitized self-portraits, abstraction, and plastic toy cameras. The work, along with copies of his books including signed copies of his latest publications, will be available for purchase during the exhibition—truly must-have collectibles from a world-class artist whom the former director of the Lancaster Museum of Art, Ellen Rosenholtz, described as follows: “Peterson’s photographs transcend the realm of objects to speak about matters of the soul.”

Saturday, October 26, 2:00 PM:   Stephen Jaffe, Mary and James H. Semans Professor of Music Composition at Duke University, and Michael Alec Rose, Associate Professor of Composition at the Blair School of Music, Vanderbilt University

On the Road to Damascus: The “Call”

Special guest: painter, poet, and curator Helen Mirkil

Helen Mirkil is a graduate of both the BFA and MFA programs at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Her paintings are included in numerous prestigious public and private collections, and have been exhibited at the Berman Museum of Art, Mary Washington University, the Michener Art Museum, the Delaware Art Museum, and the Butler Institute of American Art. Also a prolific and accomplished poet, MIrkil’s first book of poetry, “The Sower on the Cliffs,” was published by Book Arts Press.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

John Weiss (1941-2017) was a formidable figure in contemporary art photography—a master teacher who ran the MFA photography program at the University of Delaware for more than three decades. Weiss was also a gifted photographer of people and places, with an instinct for the rhythm and music of visual design as well as an uncanny ability to reveal the deeper layers of human experience. In this first of three programs, Brian H. Peterson and his wife, painter and poet Helen Mirkil, read excerpts from a 2011 conversation between Weiss and Peterson recorded at Weiss’s home in Elkton, Maryland, and published in Peterson 2018 book “I Give My Eyes…” Beginning with their own circuitous journeys on the creative path, the conversation eventually arrives at Weiss’s personal “road to Damascus” experience, when he collapsed in front of a photograph at a gallery opening and then committed himself to a life in creative photography.

Note: Programs will take place at

GALLERY VERRAZZANO

Niki Hildebrand on display at @ ‪‎theArtWorks‬™ Wilmington North Carolina . Opens March 2nd and runs March 2nd to May 15th.
Hildebrand just returned from an artist residency in the mountains and made 400 glass leaves which she has now melded into an installation titled "Dreams of the Lungs of the Earth". This is shown along with her other art.

Hildebrand received grants and awards, including the ‪‎WH Mellon Foundation Grant as well as funding and scholarships to the ‪Pilchuck School of Glass and Penland School of Crafts. Charlie started her love of painting after years of marriage and moving throughout the state of NC with her husband of 31 years, Phil.  When they would move, she found herself looking for things to, so she became a crafter.  Being an evolving character, she picked up a paint brush one day and hasn't put it down since.  Charlie can look at something and study it until she figures out how to do it...well as long as it isn't cooking.  Lol.  But that is how she learned to paint, at the beginning.  Now She goes to conventions and workshops every year to increase her knowledge in the art world.  She is a certified instructor with acrylics and WOILS, and teaches two classes a week.

Charlie has won awards with her paintings and creative thoughts.  She has even been published in an art book for one of her designs.

Charlie is a mother to 3 beautiful children, Philip-30, Samantha-27, and Hunter-23.  She has a daughter-in-love, Kim, and two grandchildren, Bella-5, and Trace-7 months.  She also has four legged children which help to calm her spirit when needed.

Charlie and Phil are looking forward to being a part of this great community, getting to know the other artists and making new friends.

If ever asked what makes her happy she will always tell you creating....but especially her family.  So if you ever need a break from creating, come to her studio and pull up chair, grab a diet coke from her refrigerator, and spend time talking about your family, pets, travel, or your art.  There is always an open door at Charlie's Studio.

Kyle Lindley-A native of the Wilmington, NC area, Kyle Lindley began playing and writing at the age of 14. He began playing professionally in Charlotte while attending UNC-Charlotte. Starting with Bob Dylan, his fascination in Folk music grew immensely affecting his writing. Brought up on legends such as Van Morrison, Neil Young, Woody Guthrie and Jerry Jeff Walker, Kyle began a journey of traditional interest in roots music. Now he is writing well-crafted and critically acclaimed songs of contemporary and Old Time reference.
