Confluence-Connections in Fiber

National juried fiber art show at theArtWorks™ 200 Willard St,  Wilmington, NC from June 2nd through June 25th.

Opening reception on Friday June 2nd, and a Fourth Friday Gallery Walk event on Friday June 23rd.

“Confluence-Connections in Fiber '' is a fiber art show with works from compelling, award winning fiber artists from around the country; Patricia Turner, Penny Mateer, Beverly Smith, Susan Lenz Dingman,  J. Bruce Wilcox,  Richard Lunz, Mary Mazziotti, Michele Jaquis, R'hea Roland-Singer, Robin Lynn Haller, and others.

Patricia Turner of Sarasota Florida will be here to discuss her work with our guests on June 2nd, the opening night. Turner uses her fiber art to call attention to tough and grim subject matter such as lynchings and racism.

Beverly Smith of Charlotte NC makes art quilts and states, "It is a characteristic of my work to focus on themes from the Antebellum South that address past taboos and controversial issues".

Mary Mazziotti of Pittsburgh states, "I make artwork, often textile based, on the frailty of Life and the inevitably Death. This genre is called memento mori…"

Robin Lynn Haller,an associate professor in the Textile Desiggn Program at East Carolina University, is a master weaver that uses the latest technology combined with hand dyed fibers to create remarkable works. She has exhibited nationally and internationally and has won multiple awards including two-timeBest of Show Awarrd in Fiber Celebration, Colorado.

J. Bruce Wilcox of Denver Colorado creates abstract fiber works. "I am not a quilter. I do not make quilts. I do not think like a quilter."

"Unlike representational art, abstract art reflects back a unique experience for each viewer."

Las Artistas

We are a group of 12 women abstract artists who have been creating art together for over 5 years. Most of us have been painting for many decades. We come from all corners of the United States once a year to spend a week painting with each other and enjoying one another’s company.

It all started with artist and gallery owner, Merry Calderoni, and several artists she had met (all abstract painters) in various workshops. One of the artists, Cookie Ashton, convinced Merry to host a self directed workshop in Merry’s city of residence, San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. At the time, she and her husband, Ben, owned a Bed and Breakfast that was an ideal size for the group. Merry also found a perfect studio space at the Instituto de Allende in San Miguel. This was the beginning of our many years of friendship and of our love of creating art together. We spent 3 consecutive years enjoying our time as a group in SMA, then moved to another venue in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We now find ourselves in the lovely city of Wilmington, North Carolina, courtesy of one of our participants, Peggy Vineyard.

Our love of creating art is what holds us together. We give each other support and encouragement during our workshop journeys. It is the painting that we have in common and is our focus, but our group also brings to the table varied professional backgrounds and experiences: real estate agent, gallery owners, tv personality and caterer, art teacher, horse owners and fox hunters, social workers, journalist, accountant and interior designer.

Our deep friendship has grown by standing side by side in a quiet studio creating art and then in the celebratory times in between painting sessions. Originally we came to make our art but, through the years, we have developed a personal understanding of and admiration for each other.  Art brought us together and still does…only now we also come for the camaraderie and  fellowship. What could be more fun or rewarding?

Organizational History

January of 2022, following the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Artistic Director Angela Burns created Wilmington Voices to rebuild a sense of community and connection across diverse groups of people in New Hanover County and the surrounding areas. Wilmington Voices presents choral music of the highest caliber to the communities of Eastern North Carolina and seeks to ensure that people from all walks of life have free access to high quality music and outreach programming. This ensemble is the first and only of its kind within 160 miles of its location. The powerful and collaborative art of choral singing is valuable to all communities; it contributes to our spiritual and cultural life while nourishing our relationships with others. Wilmington Voices encourages new talent to audition and join the ensemble –we recognize the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and we are open and affirming to BIPOC, LGBTQ+ and minority performers.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to enrich lives and engage audiences with creativity and abiding passion for music through choral repertoire and choral expression. We are a collaborative ensemble led by our love of diverse music. We live our core values while demonstrating artistic and organizational excellence and championing a wide variety of musical styles. Our legacy is one of distinguished work and lasting impact. Like our name suggests, Wilmington Voices is a celebration of choral excellence in eastern North Carolina.

Gillian Krystal Live

Gillian Krystal is a singer-songwriter from New York, currently based in Nashville. Her unique blend of soulful, ethereal melodies inspire and evoke feeling with each song. Starting out with a background in musical theatre, she knew she loved to sing throughout her life but quickly realized her passion for songwriting once she picked up a guitar.
After singing the national anthem at the TD Bank firework show, she met Russ DeSalvo who produced her debut EP, Torn, in July of 2020. She fell in love with the process and decided to pursue music full-time in Nashville.
