Silver Arts Exhibition and Sale

The 2017 SilverArts competition will once again take place at theArtWorks™ at 200 Willard Street Wilmington, NC. TheArtWorks™ once housed the thriving Block Shirt factory, then the manufacturing of plastic plumbing, and most recently antique cars.  But now this historic building is fast becoming one of Wilmington, North Carolina's premier art villages. Inside you will find an, “Art Village,” of over 50 working artist’s studios. Many of whom will be entering into the SilverArts competition.

SilverArts is a component of the Senior Games By the Sea, which is a state of NC sponsored program.  Here in Wilmington it is called the “Senior Games by the Sea” and as of this year 2016 has officially become one of the YMCA yearly events supported with participating organizations such as the Wilmington Art Association. This program is a state wide Competition in numerous athletic events and an Art Competition in the 4 Art categories of the SilverArts, the Visual Arts, Heritage Arts, Literary Arts and Performing Arts.

This event and all the various categories are open to all NC residents age 50 and over.

“The SilverArts, is a celebration of the creative expression of seniors in North Carolina. It is a major component of the traditional athletic competition of North Carolina Senior Games.  In a philosophy that strives to keep seniors healthy, active and involved, SilverArts unites the athlete and artist in a program that recognizes the similarities of both endeavors: discipline, dedication, and pride in one's accomplishments. SilverArts provides a stage for the creative talents of the visual, heritage, literary, and performing artists.  Encouragement and recognition of creative potential and accomplishment is the goal of the SilverArts program.” In Wilmington this program is over seen by the board of the “Senior Games by the Sea.” The events are held throughout Wilmington between the months of April and May.

TheArtWorks™ is honored to host the SilverArts, as their Mission is to theArtWorks™ Mission is to Enhance the Community, Assist the artist, Contribute to the Revitalization of Downtown Wilmington. Arts in Wilmington Awards January 28 6-9 PM

The awards are 6-9 p.m. Jan. 28 at theArtWorks™  art studios and event space on Willard Street. TICKETS: AIWawards.EventBrite.com

By John Staton #WilmingtonStarNews Staff

People in the arts work hard, often for little or no money, to make the world a better place. For that, a little bit of recognition is in order.

That's the idea behind the first Arts In Wilmington Awards, to be held 6-9 p.m. Jan. 28 at theArtWorks™ art studios and event space on Willard Street. In addition to four honors being handed out, the event will include live music, food, drinks and an after-party.

Craig Stinson started the Arts in Wilmington organization in 2014 as a way to bring together artists, arts professionals and arts advocates. More than 1,600 people subscribe to AIW's weekly newsletter, and Stinson organizes a monthly meet-up and organizes a calendar of arts events.

He said the awards are "a natural progression" for his group that he modeled on the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Awards given annually by the South Carolina Arts Commission.

"I say modeled, but it's really been stolen," Stinson said with a laugh.

The honorees were selected from a handful of nominees whose names were submitted by members of the community. The winners were chosen by a committee of arts professionals who live outside of Wilmington. The honorees are:

  • In the "individual artist" category, Hiroshi Sueyoshi. Born in Japan, Sueyoshi is a master potter who has lived and worked in Wilmington for decades. A retrospective exhibition of his work, "Matter of Reverence," was hosted by the Cameron Art Museum in 2014-2015.
  • In the "individual" category, Jim and Betsy Knowles, owners of  the ArtWorks studios   and event space.
  • In the "organization" category, DREAMS of Wilmington, which provides young people in need with classes and activities in the literary, visual, multimedia and performing arts.
  • And in the "arts in education" category, Wilmington artist and educator Gabriel Lovejoy.
  • Each honoree gets a plaque along with well-deserved recognition.

"I've always admired creative people," Stinson said. "Anything we can do to shine a light on that is a good thing."

"Perspective" Topher Alexander Art Exhibtition and Sale

Topher Alexander: Perspective

In a society obsessed with technology, my artwork is grounded in traditional mediums and materials.  This exhibit is a survey of work from the past ten years including Vietnamese lacquer painting, oil painting, woodcut, intaglio printmaking and more.

Experimenting with multiple mediums allows me to constantly learn from creating art, each project informing the next. The past five years I have been particularly drawn to the umbrella of printmaking, creating multiple impressions is conducive to trying new approaches; each print the record of an evolution.

Second Star Theatre Presents: "The Last 5 Years"

Second Star Theatre Company proudly invites you to their inaugural production of Jason Robert Brown's "The Last 5 Years." This heart-wrenching tale is perfectly brought to life through its beautiful music, intimate moments, and an emotional storyline that will take you on a roller-coaster of feelings (bring tissues, ladies and gents).

The story explores a five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress. The show uses a form of storytelling in which Cathy's story is told in reverse chronological order (beginning the show at the end of the marriage), and Jamie's is told in chronological order (starting just after the couple have first met).

And to bump up the emotion even higher, we've cast not one but TWO pairs of actors to live out this story...double the emotion, in FOUR different versions of this iconic story.

Music Direction:
Amanda Hunter

Theatrical Advisor:
Laura Brogdon-Primavera

Starring:
LaRaisha Burnette
Sarah Holcomb
Christian Dionne
Mike Maykish

November 3-5th and 10th-12th- Shows start at 7:30 pm at theArtWorks Wilmington on 200 Willard Street, with a suggested donation of $20.

THE LAST FIVE YEARS
Is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performances materials are also supplied by MTI.

This inaugural year, downtown Wilmington will host the American Craft Walk Wilmington™ (formerly the Art Walk) on Saturday, October 15th.  This event will be the culmination of the ten-day celebration of American Craft Week Wilmington.  American Craft Week is a nationally established effort to build awareness of the Arts, Craft and Culture in America founded by CRAFT.org, a non-profit.  The former Art Walk grew tremendously over 12 years promoting the arts with the event and American Craft Walk Wilmington™ will not change the focus, or the success of the art walk, but simply connect it to a larger effort.

Many of whom will be entering into the SilverArts competition.

SilverArts is a component of the Senior Games, which is a state of NC sponsored program.
