theArtWorks™ houses  a 7K square foot gallery, artists studios, coffee shop, wifi, and more.  The gallery gives artists a place to work their work, the community an event venue.  Studios include workspace, individual galleries and shop.  Meeting and classrooms are also available. And of course, the coffee shop and wifi enhances space for conversations, meetings, and social interaction.

Janet Johnson is offering art lessons using soft pastel!


Janet is an avid pastel artist living in Wilmington, NC. She received her BS and MA in Foreign Language Education from The Ohio State University. Her Art education is self-taught. After retiring to Wilmington, NC she has re-discovered her artistic passion. Janet is achieving continued success both locally and nationally. 

She works out of theArtWorks™ Art Village, 200 Willard St. in Wilmington, a community of over 50 artist studios.  She sells her pastel paintings out of theArtworks,  Artshak Gallery & Sculpture in Southport, and Gems4U in Wilmington, North Carolina.

In just over two years she has won 9 exhibition awards and has sold numerous paintings locally and nationwide. Her pastels have been juried into two international online pastel exhibitions, one national and one statewide pastel exhibition, as well as numerous local competitions. She was invited to do a solo exhibition at Burgwin-Wright House in 2017 and will have another one in June of this year. She was the featured artist in the December 2017 issue of Wrightsville Beach Magazine. In addition, one of her paintings was featured on the July 2018 cover of ArtGuide Magazine. Janet was invited to be the main presenter for Art League of Leland’s January 2019 meeting, and was also asked to conduct a workshop on pastels for the Oak Island Art Guild.

"Four Simple Steps to Better Painting"
 with Chappy Valente

Village Artist Chappy Valente offers a beginning painting workshop. This workshop will teach you four beginning steps that will allow you to build a foundation for better painting. There will be a demonstration from blank canvas to finished product where you can ask questions and learn techniques, followed by painting time of your own. The fee for the workshop is $250 and must be paid in advance. A discount of $100 is extended to artists at theArtWorks™.

Glenn Davis Photorealistic Colored Pencil

Glenn Davis is offering a hands-on workshop on Thursdays from 6-9 p.m.

This is an “open studio” opportunity for colored pencil artists at all levels. Discover the excitement and advantages of creating fine art with colored pencils. They will be small group sessions with lots of individual help. There will be four sessions, you can attend one or all four. The cost per session is $35, with a 10% discount for prepaying for all four. Supplies are available for beginners at an addition $10 per session.

Perry Smith Guitar and Drums

Perry Smith offers classes on guitar, mandolin and hand percussion.  Classes are taught in 30 minutes or group sessions.

Monday 1:30 - 7 pm
Tuesday 4 - 7 pm
Wednesday 4 - 4:30 pm


Available to teach in drum circles or travel with drums.  Learn basic hand drum skills, some West African rhythms, hot to freestyle, and have fun playing with others.   


Classes are taught in a three part system:

  1. Reading Music - classical and contemporary

  2. Playing Songs - chords and singing

  3. Lead Guitar - theory, scales and improvisation


In addition to classes, Perry brings the perfect music to your event (and that includes theArtWorks-Wilmington(tm) events!).  He has been performing for a wide range of audiences since he was a child and plays solo or in ensemble.    

Perry's specialties include the following:  classical guitar; electric guitar; acoustic guitar; Native American flute; mandolin; original songs; popular songs; West African and Middle Eastern percussion; percussion for musical groups; drum circles; and dance accompaniment.
