theArtWorks™ houses a 7K square foot gallery, artists studios, coffee shop, wifi, and more. The gallery gives artists a place to work their work, the community an event venue. Studios include workspace, individual galleries and shop. Meeting and classrooms are also available. And of course, the coffee shop and wifi enhances space for conversations, meetings, and social interaction.

Erika Lawrence, who occupies the large purple studio at the end of Rembrandt, has been at theArtWorks™ since its beginning.
First a painter, she now primarily works with clay and turns out 3D masterpieces. Some of her works are lovely and interesting hand crafted containers with (don't tell!) secret lids, and she says she thinks of them as vessels. Not only are they great for hiding valuables, but I hear they make perfect urns to keep the ashes of the dearly departed. In this picture, a vessel is to the right of the mysterious beauty who holds the world in her hands.
Art can be a controversial subject. It has been abused, celebrated, maligned, and glorified but most of all, it is a part of everyone's daily life whether we are aware or not.
But what is art? A dictionary definition says it is ". . . an expression or application of human creative skill and imagination."
And what else?
"Art is a discovery and development of elementary principles of nature into beautiful forms suitable for human use." Frank Lloyd Wright
"Art is anything that communicates emotion." Leo Tolstoy
"Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known." Oscar Wilde
"Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time." Thomas Merton
"Art evokes the mystery without which the world would not exist." Rene Magritte
"Where the spirit does not work with the hand there is no art." Leonardo da Vinci

We are pleased that several of our artists have entered their work in the Landfall Foundation Art Show. We have seen them at their easels and know their pieces are beautiful. The show will be held at the Dye Clubhouse, 1552 Landfall Drive in Wilmington, and will be open to the public from tomorrow through Saturday. Good luck to theArtWorks™ artists Cathy Johnson, Janet Sessoms, Mary Austin, and Sandy Nelson.

Jane Capen and Mary Welch Austin discussing some technical points of painting in Jane's studio at theArtWorks™.
Original paintings by Mary Welch Austin of theArtWorks™.
Charlie McGee paints on anything!
Today she is concentrating on painting adorable mermaids on goblets. They are perfect for a coastal town and for a little "thinking of you" gift. Her studio has a variety of other equally delightful painted glassware.
Come shop with us!
Sunday afternoon and the artists are coming and going, working and bringing in visitors.
A new artist who is fixing up her corner studio today is Shelby Treichler, a graduate of UNCW in graphic design. I think the studio will be primarily for 3D printing, something the rest of us are looking forward to learning about.
It was dreary, drizzly, and gray outside today, but inside theArtWorks™ it was bright and lively. In addition to Open Studios Saturday and quite a few visitors, Chad Hartwell hosted a large group of photographers and models who mostly assembled and shot around Jim's cars, always great backdrops for pictures. The enthusiastic group of studio artists in house shared ideas and new works with each other, Betsy and Jim, and chatted about all that is taking place in the art community. There is always something interesting going on at theArtWorks™!

Wilmington #artist Paul Hill is a metal sculptor who works in steel, stainless steel, bronze and copper. Well-known for his sculpture Southern Hospitality, an artistic rendering of the Venus flytrap, Paul has exhibited his works throughout North Carolina. He has also been commissioned to create works by Screen Gems Movie Studios, MTU/Detroit Diesel, and Southern Jet, Inc. Commissions are welcome. http://www.absolutearts.com/metalforms/
Cary sculptor Phil Hathcock was born and raised in North Carolina where his appreciation for nature began at an early age. His love of rocks and boulders and a curiosity of how rock formations evolve from geological and natural events led to a career of working with stone. His work has been exhibited widely including universities, galleries and numerous public and private arenas. Some of Phil’s sculptures are on permanent display at Duke University, UNC-Chapel Hill and the cities of Cary and Pinehurst, NC, Charlottesville, VA and North Charleston, SC. http://www.philhathcock.com/
the ArtWorks™ believes in supporting and promoting not only our own artists, but the local #art community and the Wilmington Community at large. We want to share that the Arts Council of Wilmington and New Hanover County has launched the Pedestrian Art public sculpture program again. They have installed six public art works by Wilmington sculptor #PaulHill and Cary sculptor #PhilHathcock in downtown Wilmington, North Carolina.
The pieces are located in Bijou Park, 305 Chestnut Street, 6th & Castle streets, 407 Water St., New Hanover Community Health Center, and the Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce. Each sculpture is available for purchase from the artist after their 6 month stay in the city. Naturally we would love for the city or a corporate sponsor to purchase them and make them truly public art for our community and visitors to enjoy forever.
Quote from Rhonda Bellamy, executive director of the Arts Council of Wilmington. "PedArt has always served as an economic, cultural, and visual stimulus in our community,” We look forward to growing a creative culture which enhances the public space using a wide range of artistic styles, themes, and media. In addition to introducing our citizens to the diversity of contemporary public art and artists, we are creating additional points of interest for tourists.”
